NEW POLL SHOWS COMPETITIVE RACE BETWEEN WERTZ AND LAUGHLIN IN SD-49 WITH CLEAR PATH TO VICTORY FOR WERTZ
Key findings: Voters’ support for abortion rights bolsters narrow lead for Wertz; undecided voters lean Democratic
Erie, PA — Less than a month after the Pennsylvania primary election, a new poll of Senate District 49 from Public Policy Polling shows a highly competitive race between Democrat Jim Wertz and incumbent Republican Dan Laughlin with a clear path to victory for Wertz.
Some highlights from the poll include:
- Wertz is still relatively unknown to voters: 58% of voters are unsure of their opinion of him
- Undecided voters lean Democratic: undecided voters would vote for President Biden by a +14 margin and Senator Bob Casey by a +38 margin this November.
- 65% of voters in the district think abortion should be legal in all or most cases
- When voters are informed of Wertz and Laughlin’s different positions on abortion, Wertz leads the race 44-43.
Public Policy Polling surveyed 509 Pennsylvania 49th Senate District voters from April 29-30, 2024. The margin of error is +/- 4.3%. 51% of interviews for the survey were conducted by text message and 49% by telephone.
