Jim Wertz announces campaign for PA State Senate

The former chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party is throwing his name in the hat for a Pennsylvania Senate seat. Democrat Jim Wertz announced on Tuesday night he’ll look to challenge incumbent Pennsylvania Senator Dan Laughlin for the 49th District seat.

It’s a race some say they’re intrigued by due to the familiarity the candidates have with one another. In August 2022, Laughlin filed a defamation lawsuit against Wertz and the Erie Readerover an opinion piece that alleged Laughlin’s involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election and alleged inclusion on a presidential pardon list.

“I think the people of Erie County know my opponent as one particular type of candidate and elected official. I think when he gets 300 miles away in Harrisburg, he’s a very different person, and I think his voting record shows that,” said Wertz.
